Digital vs Traditional art - which is best ?

Digital art has become increasingly popular in recent years, as technology has advanced and made it easier for artists to create and share their work online. But what are the pros and cons of digital art compared to traditional painting and drawing?

One major pro of digital art is that it is highly versatile. Digital tools allow for easy manipulation and editing of images, making it possible to create a wide range of styles and effects. Artists can also work with layers, which can make the creative process more efficient and allow for greater flexibility in the final product. Additionally, digital art can be easily shared and distributed online, which can help artists gain exposure and reach a wider audience.

Another pro of digital art is that it can be more cost-effective than traditional art. Digital tools are generally less expensive than traditional art materials, and there is no need to purchase additional supplies like canvases or paints. Additionally, digital art can be easily stored and backed up, making it less vulnerable to damage or loss.

However, digital art also has its cons. One major con is that it can be highly dependent on technology. Without the right equipment or software, it can be difficult to create digital art. Additionally, digital art relies heavily on the use of screens, which can be hard on the eyes and lead to eye strain. With digital work it is also hard to emulate some of the amazing bleeding effects you can get with watercolour:

Another con of digital art is that it can lack the tactile quality of traditional art. Many artists enjoy the feel of paint or charcoal on a canvas, and the process of creating traditional art can be very satisfying. Additionally, traditional art often has a sense of permanence and can be passed down through generations as an heirloom. For a more sentimental piece such as a family or pet portrait traditional illustration may be a more impressive piece of have hanging on the wall.

In conclusion, digital art has its pros and cons, it offers versatility and cost-effectiveness but it is dependent on technology and lack the tactile quality of traditional art. Ultimately, the choice between digital art and traditional art depends on the individual artist's preferences and goals, plus what their client requires. Both have their own unique charm and both have their own set of benefits.

I started myself as a traditional artist but now over the years have slowly gone to digital. I find with the option to change and make adjustment this allows me to get the perfect results for my clients. For logos and book covers especially digital is best as colour tend to appear more vibrant, and images can be scaled up for commercial uses.
